Singapore, November 9, 2018: Sembcorp Marine’s School Book Assistance Grant (SchoolBAG) today awarded $203,800 in bursaries to 1,002 primary, secondary and junior college students from 84 schools. This brings the annual programme’s cumulative contributions to more than $4.2 million since its inception in 2001.
Designed to support school-going children of families with monthly household incomes not exceeding $1,500, SchoolBAG has now benefited over 21,000 students.
Minister of Education Mr Ong Ye Kung presented the 2018 SchoolBAG bursaries to school representatives this afternoon at the CHIJ Our Lady Queen of Peace. He said: “I thank Sembcorp Marine for helping students from financially-disadvantaged backgrounds. The Government, businesses, society and community need to do more to help these students, and what Sembcorp Marine is doing today is a good example of what companies can do. I am sure the SchoolBAG bursaries are very much appreciated by the recipients.”

Explaining the motivation behind the programme, Sembcorp Marine President and CEO Mr Wong Weng Sun said SchoolBAG aims to assist as many students as possible.
Mr Wong said: “I am glad SchoolBAG has reached out to over 21,000 students since we started the programme 18 years ago, and that in some small way we have helped ease the financial burdens of their families. Education opens the door to a brighter future and we hope every student has the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential. We will therefore continue to invest in SchoolBAG and other initiatives supporting educational causes.”
SchoolBAG is a major part of Sembcorp Marine’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts focusing on youth development, education, arts, sports and nation-building. The Group embraces Community Responsibility as one of its core values and organises a number of events, sponsorships and employee-led charitable activities annually.
Last year, Sembcorp Marine contributed 5,100 hours of employee time and about $1.3 million towards CSR programmes.
