On August 6, 2019, Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu met with Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Peter Tan Hai Chuan of Singapore, who was attending the Asian ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Senior Officials' Meeting in China.
Ma Zhaoxu said, China and Singapore maintain sound communication and coordination within the ASEM and other multilateral mechanisms. China's proposal of holding this senior officials' meeting aims at strengthening Asian unity and coordination and sending positive messages in the aspects of maintaining multilateralism, building an open world economy, and promoting connectivity construction. The Chinese side is willing to join its efforts with the ASEM partners including Singapore.
Peter Tan Hai Chuan appreciated China's proposal of holding this senior officials' meeting. He said that it would help the Asian partners to enhance exchanges and build consensus. Under the current situation, the ASEM should hold high the banner of multilateralism, promote connectivity, and strengthen practical cooperation in multilateral trade negotiations and other areas.
